How long does a Dynamics 365 implementation take?
It depends on how much you put in the first release. The scope you choose matters more than the product.
The short answer
- One process, one release: about six weeks. A single case, claim, intake, grant or licensing workflow on Dynamics 365, Dataverse and Power Pages, with one bounded integration, can reach production in six weeks when the release boundary is fixed in week one.
- Several processes or departments: months, released in steps. A broader CRM or case management program usually runs as a series of releases. Each release should still be small enough to finish and use.
- ERP and finance replacements: longer again. Moving general ledger, procurement or payroll onto Dynamics 365 Finance or Business Central involves data conversion, parallel runs and financial controls, and commonly takes many months. A large firm with a big bench is often the right choice for that work.
What makes an implementation longer
- An open-ended scope. Without a fixed first-release boundary, every workshop adds requirements.
- Data migration. Years of records in old systems need mapping, cleaning, test loads and reconciliation.
- Integrations. Each connection to finance, identity, document or legacy systems adds design, testing and security review.
- Approvals. Privacy impact assessments, security reviews and procurement steps run on their own calendars. Public organizations should start them in week one.
- Decision-makers who are hard to reach. A design waiting a week for a decision costs a week.
- Bilingual content and accessibility. French content, translation review and accessibility testing need their own time in the plan.
What makes it shorter
- Lock one high-value process and a measurable outcome before any build starts.
- Keep the first release to one bounded integration, and defer the rest to the next release.
- Use standard Dataverse, model-driven apps and Power Pages before writing custom code.
- Put a named business owner in a weekly decision meeting.
- Rehearse deployment and rollback before go-live week, not during it.
A six-week release, week by week
This is how Two Rivers Digital runs a Dynamics 365 and Power Platform implementation. Each week ends with named proof.
- Process and release boundary: approved process map and acceptance scenarios.
- Dataverse and experience design: approved data, security and experience blueprint.
- Core configuration: the primary path works end to end.
- Automation and exceptions: release candidate with traceable exceptions.
- Acceptance and release rehearsal: acceptance, security review and release approval.
- Production release and handoff: verified production release and handoff pack.
Questions to ask any implementation partner
- What exactly is in the first release, and what is deferred?
- What proof will we see at the end of each week or phase?
- Who are the named people doing the work, and what are their Microsoft certifications?
- How are data migration, integrations and security review scheduled?
- What do we receive at handoff, and who supports the system after launch?
